Zhang Zhuohua, male, Han ethnicity, was born in September 1963, a native of Changsha, Hunan. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) degree in Molecular Pathology from the University of California, San Diego in the United States. He is currently a professor at Xiangya School of Medicine of Central South University, the president of the University of South China, a member of the Standing Committee of the Central Committee of the Chinese Peasants and Workers Democratic Party, and the chairperson of the Hunan Provincial Committee of the same party. He is also a member of the Standing Committee of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and the vice chairperson of the 13th Hunan Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

In 1999, he won the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. In 2001, he was appointed as a Changjiang Scholar Distinguished Professor by the Ministry of Education. In 2008, he was selected as an expert under the National High-level Overseas Talents Introduction Program. In 1999, he won the First Prize of the First Changjiang Achievement Award of the Ministry of Education (ranked third). In 2010, he won the Second Prize of the National Natural Science Award (ranked second). In 2013, he won the First Prize of the Hunan Provincial Natural Science Award (ranked first). His academic positions also include being the chief scientist of the National Key Basic Research Program (973), a member of the Discipline Evaluation Group of the Sixth and Seventh Sessions of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, a member of the Biology and Medicine Division of the Sixth and Seventh Sessions of the Science and Technology Committee of the Ministry of Education, the president of the Hunan Genetic Society, an Honorary Professor of Flinders University in Australia, and a member of the editorial boards of international academic journals such as Journal of Neurochemistry and Biochimica et Biophysica Acta. Zhang Zhuohua is mainly devoted to the research on the molecular pathological mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases.
