
Recently, at the 50th Anniversary Academician Conference of the International Academy of Ophthalmology held in Leiden, the Netherlands, Professor Liu Zuguo of the First Affiliated Hospital of University of South China was elected as an academician of the International Academy of Ophthalmologica Internationalis (AOI). Professor Richard L. Abbott, President of the International Academy of Ophthalmology, and the executive director awarded Liu Zuguo the AOI academician medal and certificate.

The International Academy of Ophthalmology was established in Belgium in 1975. It is the most influential academic organization in ophthalmology in the world, leading the development of ophthalmology in the world. AOI Academician is a lifelong honor and "the highest honor in the field of ophthalmology in the world". The total number of academicians is limited to 100 worldwide, and they are elected through academician nomination and voting. At present, there are 97 top ophthalmologists from 33 countries around the world.
Liu Zuguo is the founder of dry eye discipline and clinical diagnosis and treatment system of dry eye in China. He discovered that dry eyes can lead to visual impairment and its mechanism, and was listed as one of the three most important developments in this field by the International Dry Eye Guidelines. He put forward a new classification method of dry eye internationally, developed and broke through a number of new technologies, drugs and devices for diagnosis and treatment of "stuck neck", and 27 achievements were written into or adopted in international, Asian and Chinese dry eye guidelines and consensus, and were adopted by 22 textbooks in China. He participated in the writing of 5 international dry eye guidelines, and took the lead in formulating 12 dry eye consensus and guidelines in China. At the same time, he invented a new method to treat pig cornea to make pig tissue engineered cornea, and successfully transplanted pig tissue engineered cornea to humans.
Liu Zuguo has published more than 550 articles in authoritative journals such as BMJ and STTT, and edited and co-edited more than 40 textbooks and monographs. The paper has been cited more than 13,000 times and obtained more than 30 invention patents. He won the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award 3 times and the first prize of Ministerial and Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award 10 times. It has received funding from more than 50 funds including the National Key R&D Program Project, the 973 Project, the 863 Key Project, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He has won a series of domestic and foreign academic awards and titles such as the "Celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China" commemorative medal, China Youth Science Award, Asia-Pacific Ophthalmology Achievement Award, Chinese Ophthalmology Outstanding Achievement Award, and the 6th National Famous Doctor · Outstanding Achievement Title.
